In 2015, the water company Consorci d'Aigües de Tarragona (CAT) chose AQUADVANCED® Energy to optimize their drinking water distribution. Water is drawn from the Ebro River and once treated at the plant in L’Ampolla, supplies 63 municipalities daily, including Tarragona and Reus, 26 companies such as Dow and Repsol, representing 800,000 people and up to 1.5 million during the summer. Since the implementation of the system, more than 1 million euros of savings have been recorded, representing 7% of the CAT's annual energy expenditure.

 
 

Energy at the best price

The AQUADVANCED® Energy system continuously reads the latest market rates to use in its calculations. An advantage for the Consorci d'Aigües de Tarragona, which is on the free energy market and which, without this solution, would continue to be affected by its ongoing fluctuations. The system plans the day-to-day operation making the most of the lowest electricity prices. With an average production of 270,000 m3/day and up to 330,000 m3/day in summer, the stakes are high.
 
The result? A significant reduction in energy costs.
 
 
 

Optimal use of facilities

The system operates over the 400 kilometres of pipes, 23 pumping stations and 580,000 m3 of storage which make up the CAT network. It organises the rotation of the pumps, focusing on the most efficient ones, while ensuring that each one runs regularly. In the event where a pump cannot run and has been off for too long, a warning is raised to keep the operators informed. Stored water is automatically cycled on a regular basis in order to limit the residence time and water age. CAT has several benefits: increased operational efficiency, preservation of the installations without compromising on water quality.
 
 
 

Reduce the environmental footprint

In Spain, the price of energy is strongly linked to the availability of renewable solar and wind energy. As Jason Kramer, Project Manager at SUEZ Smart Solutions explains to us: "When this renewable energy is more widely available, the price of electricity is lower. The system naturally tends to run the pumps at that time. This is a clear advantage not only in terms of savings but also in environmental terms, since there is less carbon produced for every kW used." That's a win-win!
